Waterside residents are celebrating after a local housing estate captured a prestigious award.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane Council, Hilary McClintock, welcomed residents from the Caw area to the Guildhall recently to congratulate them on scooping an award for Best Improved Housing Estate.
The Northern Ireland Amenity Council recognised the Caw area through the special award, which is being viewed at the culmination of very hard work at ground level by local community representatives.
Linda Watson, Co-Ordinator of the Caw and Nelson Drive Action Group, said:
“We have built amazing partnerships with organisations like the Housing Executive which has allowed us to complete very positive work in this area.
“It’s a real boost for us to be recognized in such a public way, we already have a popular Community Growing Space which includes a poly tunnel, shed and raised beds and we’re working with the Housing Executive’s Ground Maintenance department to develop and extend a woodland area at the entrance to the Caw estate.
“Thanks so much to Mayor McClintock for taking the time to recognize the good work being delivered locally in Caw and for sharing our celebrations after accepting the Best Improved Housing Estate award.”
Eddie Doherty from the Housing Executive also attended the Guildhall reception and said:
“It is a source of inspiration to see an area like the Caw get recognition for hard work, making the area a place of choice for tenants to come and build their lives.
“We were delighted to be on hand at the Guildhall to offer our congratulations and we’re sure the excellent work we’ve seen in recent years will continue into 2017 and beyond.”
